Our Legacy

Expertise in the Iron & Steel Industry ...

Grand Smithy Works (GSW), established in 1942 by the late B.C. Agarwala, has a rich history and legacy in the iron and steel industry. Initially, GSW focused on industrial and disposable scrap in India. In 1952, under the visionary leadership of the late Yudhisthir Lal Agarwala, GSW pioneered the iron and steel scrap industry in India, marking a significant milestone by exporting scrap to Japan.

GSW became a trailblazer by acquiring the entire scrap output from Tata Iron and Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO). We also innovated in scrap excavation and recovery from slag dumps accumulated over decades. This endeavor resulted in the processing and export of millions of tons of ferrous scrap to Japan and South Korea, establishing GSW as the largest exporter of iron and steel scrap from India until the export ban in 1976.

In recognition of our groundbreaking efforts, GSW received the prestigious Export Award from the Government of India in 1969.
